Founder and CEO of Supersapiens, Phil Southerland was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 7-months old. He was expected to be blind or dead by 25.
But growing up, he realized exercise enabled him to manage the disease and that glucose control led to success in sports. An obsession with glucose began. Teaming up with Abbott in 2006, Phil used their continuous glucose monitor (CGM) in the Race Across America. His all type 1 diabetic team finished second place on their first attempt; the following year, armed with a better understanding of glucose management, they won the race and set a new World Record time.
Phil has been working with Abbott to pioneer CGM for the past 16 years. And when he linked CGM data to head units in 2018, Phil experienced the ‘a-ha’ moment, connecting real-time glucose levels and exercise performance. He learned more in 15 days about energy management with CGM information on his head unit than in the previous 15 years.
Phil knew the value of this data was not just for people with diabetes, but for every athlete, and every human who needs energy striving to become a better version of themselves.
Supersapiens was born.
Today, our team carries forward that origin story. Through discipline, exercise, and data, anything can be accomplished.
We’re building a complete energy management system that will change the way all humans think about food, exercise, sleep, and performance—physically, and mentally. We’ve built the community to support that mission with science, data, content, and coaching. We can’t wait for you to join us on your own journey of becoming Supersapien.
Nkyinkyim is an ancient Adinkra symbol depicting the harsh nature of life’s journey. Life is full of challenges but that is no exuse to resign to fate. By sheer force of will and determination, you can succeed.
The Nkyinkyim ethos is carried throughout the brand. Supersapiens is for those who understand the value of marginal improvements. It’s about training for 6 months to go 1 second faster. It’s that 1 second difference that wins titles.
After years of researching and tinkering, Tim teamed up with Joey Zwillinger, an engineer and renewables expert. Together, they crafted a revolutionary wool fabric made specifically for footwear. The outcome? An entirely new category of shoes inspired by natural materials, and an ongoing mantra to create better things in a better way.
A native of New Zealand, Tim Brown was always well versed in the magical qualities of merino wool. Inherently curious, he began asking himself why such a remarkable, sustainable resource was virtually absent in the footwear industry. And with that spirit of wonder, the Allbirds journey began.
